We use a tool called that we *love.* Very simple and easy to use. It allows you to install Windows Updates as well as standalone patches or software. They recommend to use it in conjunction with WSUS but WSUS is not required. We have an entire segment of our LAN with no WSUS, and so we use BatchPatch as a complete WSUS alternative / replacement on that segment. For the rest of our network we use it in conjunction with WSUS. It has other features such as rebooting, pinging, remote script execution etc. They have a free evaluation version that's fully functional (only limits the number of simultaneous hosts), so it's definitely worth a look.

My boss has asked for me to come up with a schedule to deploy Windows updates to the desktops in our environment (~1000) on a schedule that mirrors our server environment. The servers in our Test environment are updated the day after patch Tuesday, and the test users kick the tires. If all goes well, we roll out the updates on the fourth Wednesday to production. This is accomplished using SolarWinds Patch Management. My boss wants the same schema to apply to Desktops. These are currently being patched via WSUS and scheduled to check for and deploy patches daily.
Since WSUS does not natively allow for other than daily or a specific day during the week for patching, I am looking at other tools. Any suggestions? • Note: I am opposed to the idea of delaying patches to the desktops. I think that they are the most vulnerable point for malware/Viruses and should be patched as frequently as possible. But, I also enjoy eating regularly and living indoors.
Keep trying.once you have a handle on SCCM it starts to become worth it imo. Without SCCM you're probably looking at a 3rd party alternative. KACE is decent and I think K1000 comes in fairly low cost, especially if you're a Dell shop (they sometimes throw it in for free). Spiceworks is another possibility that is free by default.but I've never used it in a production environment. You could also maybe get by using task scheduler on the PCs themselves, and use a script to psexec-import the xmls needed to drive it. With this method you'd disable automatic updates on the clients but keep the WUA active, then initiate update cycles via command-line. (it'd be a pain to administer, but that could be the free-est free method) • • • • •.
I have my WSUS check for updates daily at 5:00 A.M. Automatically approves all updates for my test group. Drivers Nokia 6101 Gratis here. That test group gets those updates same day. When the test computers shutdowns that night the updates are applied.
After one week, if no issues are found I approve the updates for all production groups. Those machines receive those updates that day and when they shutdown they are applied.
Seriously WSUS isn't pretty but it gets the job done. Remember, if the update requires a reboot that patch doesn't go into effect until the user shutdowns/restarts the machine. I've had to force some users to restart.

Update: The program is now known as WSUS Offline Update. Its functionality remained largely the same though even though support for new versions of Windows have been added by its author.
Autopatcher was the perfect solution to update your Windows operating system while it lasted. You could download all patches to your local computer and execute them from there or distribute them to It allowed you to download patches once and update several computers locally using that single download without downloading patches from Microsoft servers multiple times.
Autopatcher has been closed down by Microsoft. There is an alternative, a great one that can be used instead. It is called c't Offline Updater. It supports Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, 64-bit editions of XP and Server 2003 as well as Windows Vista (Update more recent versions of Windows as well).
Besides support for operating systems, it also supports Office 2000, Office XP, Office 2003 and Office 2007 (Update and newer versions). As you can see from the screenshot below, lots of different languages are supported by it as well.
The program divides the download options into three tabs. The first tab displays all supported client and server Windows operating systems. Please note that this includes only systems that Microsoft supports which at the time of writing means Windows Vista and up on the consumer side, and Windows Server 2008 and up on the server side.
The same is true for the Office tab. There you find listed all supported Office versions starting with Office 2007 currently.
Last but not least, Windows Server 2003 is listed under legacy products.
All you need to do to download all updates for a particular version of Windows or Office is to select the right version in the interface.
Once you have made the selection at the top, you may change options displayed in the lower half of the interface.
There you may add C++ Runtime Libraries and .Net Framworks, Windows Essentials 2012, Windows Defender definitions and Microsoft Security Essentials to the download.
WSUS Offline Update verifies downloads automatically and includes service packs in the process as well.
Apart from that, you may select to create ISO images from the downloads so that you can burn them to disc easily.
A click on starts begins the process. It may take a while before all updates are downloaded, especially if you select multiple operating systems or Office version.
